this is one good topic because i seen guys try sell there dogs for big dollars and the dogs are basically grabbers that answer bark and they like couple hundred dollars for one grabber and that kind dogs you can just go to the pound and get one for 60 bucks and they already grab....i think one good dog you cannot put one price on but if had too my good dogs i would put um in the 4 digit catagories not because they good but also all the time you put into um....those dogs its priceless all the sweat... the vet bills..... the walking.... the time being spent in the mountain....the time waiting for the dogs come.... thats all priceless but i know get some braddahs that hook guys up with good dogs and they give cheap prices trackers for 300 which is one good price....ALOHA GOOD TOPIC...KEPP UM COMIN

I would pay 800 for a dog that I've hunted with and seen work to my standards at least twice. The age of the dog makes a difference in the price also, No like pay big bucks for a dog that's slowing down already!

 I dont think you can put a monetary value on the type of dog your'e talking about. I think most guys (IMHO) will buy a "good" dog with hopes of using it to produce one that they believe is better. Its bought as a stepping stone type of dog, maybe to kickstart a new pack or get things going just because they dont want to start from scratch. Nothing wrong with that by the way.

I notice that the "complete" dog that fits our own personal style of hunting is the one that from young, we go thru thick and thin with. Shed blood,sweat and tears with. Worried up all night with. made us stress out cuz neva come back yet, make us drive in the dead of night fo "check da shirt". Eventually you get em back. Thru all the trials n tribulations, you and this dog click. He finally gets it exactly the way you want. An unspoken bond of unbelieve understanding between you and the dog develops. It is so strong it borders on spiritual and people think your crazy! Hahaha. At this point the bond is on a highly positive emotional level. Once we get here, for me. Money is out of the question.

One of your questions is "What would you pay to have a dog like the best one you ever had?"

Honestly I have to say that is almost like a trick question for me. Because if I paid for a trained dog, the dog and I would not go thru the things as I mentioned before. And the things I mentioned before is exactly the things that would make him the best dog I ever had.

I think you can easily put a price on "good" dogs, learning dogs, barking helpas, helping grabbas, trackas etc.

but dat old reliable,proven tried and true STOPPING DOG. Hooo boy!! Haaard NO!

Train for the love of training dogs FROM SCRATCH and the $ you expect when you gotta move um to a home where it can keep progressing won't be as big a factor! Sentimental value has no price but a great hogdog that needs a new home should even if it comes down to the new owner just not being a scrub clown, Which is worth more then any amount of $ to me!

Good point maukakane, I Can relate with your response. Points well taken from all but let me rephrase with an example...    One day you run the dogs and get dirty cracks. Your only two dogs died in the process leaving you with just a young pup and starting from scratch. Your run this pup with your friends good dogs but the pup just isn't what you expected her (or him) to be. You pick up young dogs and do the same with them and get equal results. This goes on for 2, 3 years and you're beyond frustrated. Some of the dogs you were trying to train could catch pig but also came with intolerable habits (countless bad habits that we all know that comes along with young or mature dogs). Money is not an issue with you and determine you're over it, You probably spent several grand in dog food over the time frame and would have been better off from the start dropping some cash on a good dog instead of $50 hea, $100 dea ways up to $600. "screw it" you say. "I going just buy one good dog" goes through your thought.    What would you be willing to pay? (you have no other choice but to quit hunting, or carry on the way it has for the past 2 or 3 years). Would you spend $5000 for that good stopping bay dog with an exceptional air and ground nose and no bad habits? You cant buy a good started horse for that price, why wouldnt you spend $5k for a finished pig dog or would you? Share your thoughts Big island on this hypothetical situation.

I would not Donny, 5K is just to much money for me to spend on a dog that WILL MEET THE SAME FATE as my original 2! If I wasn't able to produce my own pups and had no choice I would be willing to spend a few more hundreds then 800 but not much only cause dogs die everyday and if you put all da eggs in one basket as you running around it becomes easier to lose your eggs again.

Good point Isaac and exactly what I was looking for, an answer with a reason and what you'd be willing to spend. Keep in mind, we spend a lot more money on simpler things (Vegas trip, big tires for truck, boom booms in the car) I value my hunting lifestyle like that guy values he's crap table or even more. Next to my wife, son and family... The mountain and my dog(s)is all I need. Would I be willing to spend $5k on a dog?... Probably. (please, don't anyone try sell me one dog. Lol!)

All good points....good dogs is priceless like braddah makuakane said....how much would you spend on 1 good dog ? one tracker steady barker that find and hold? i get one if interested?

We can look at it like this too! My g/f's ride needed new rotors and I was thinking "Ah easy!" well after stripping the retaining screws, Drilling um out, Pounding um with a hammer, Cursing at it, pounding um with another hammer and scraping my knuckles across the driveway a few times I gave up and threw in the towel! 2 weeks later my uncle stops by gets a good laugh and says "I get the right tool, I'll be back tommorow" Let me tell you this "right tool" had the rotors falling off the car 1 speed and in my mind is priceless compared to the frustration & ego deflating I took! Hahaha! In my opinion the tool is a simple 1 but before I volunteer myself again I will buy 1 NO MATTER THE PRICE! What I saying is the right tool for any job is worth what the buyer is willing to spend, When you see that dog hit the ground "Knowing the rules" and then producing pork like he's the "right tool" Let the negotiations begin!

Wassup Donny B.  I get a couple of help dogs if you like try um out.  One of um is one whippet mix around 5-6 years old.  Seen plenty pigs, bark and attack ass and balls.  The other one will be 2 in august, seen about 10 pigs and grabbed all of um from 4 months old.  I'll give um to you if you getting hard time.  Da older dog will track short range if da pigs around.  Lemme know I live in Keaau 960-1726 Mark

Just like maukakane said, I would try to get a dog that I felt would help better my up and comming dogs rather than an ace right off the bat. The reason being the price issue. Otherwise IMOH I think the short range dog that stays pretty active Is what would help my younger less experienced dogs to improve. I think a dog like that, you could find in the $600 dollar range. Probably wouldn't pay any more than that for that type of dog. If I worked with that for some time and still didn't get results, then I'd probably look into picking up a little better dog. Personally I don't think I could pay more than $1000. Not because I don't think good dogs are worth more than that but just because i know that my satisfaction wouldn't be based on how good the dog that I bought is, or even how much pigs I'd catch with that dog. Instead its based on how much those dogs that I bought would help my up and comers. Don't get me wrong I hunt to catch pig. But I also hunt for the satisfaction of making a good pig dog. Now to catch pig with dogs that I raised and trained, thats where I get my high! But for those who just wanna catch pig and are not too concerned with working with and training dogs, then I'd say you're subject to whatever people wanna ask for a dog.
