,74commentsWould it be a disaster if the Denver Broncos drafted Drew Lock or an offensive skill player with the 10th overall pick? Is it quarterback or bust in the first round?Oh how beautiful it all is. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, the Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche are winning and the NFL draft is on Thursday. Everything on that list is a guarantee to make us happier except of course the last one. Though the lead up to the draft is always exciting and hopeful there is always a small chance that it turns out to bedisastrous for our beloved football team. Anyone remember Alphonso Smith? The Denver Broncos have the tenth pick in the draft after drafting Bradley Chubb in the top-ten last year and when you have the shame of picking back-to-back top-ten players, you at least better make it worth it by not choking on the selections. I recently watched the movies ‘Draft Day’ with Kevin Costner and though it is definitely a flawed film, it does show what I believe to be the real chaotic atmosphere that we experience each April. GMs can and do panic and make terrible decisions on the spur of the moment and here’s to hoping that John Elway isn’t one of them in 2019.There are so many stud players available in this draft that it seems unlikely and almost impossible to totally miss no matter who they pick at the decade mark in the draft. QBs have been picked in the top-ten many times and there have been far more misses than hits which has been a problem that teams have had for decades. If you need a QB - like about half the league does - then you will give up whatever it takes if you think one of the guys could be “it”. The Broncos infamously traded up for Paxton Lynch who was a bomb of all bombs but it’s not like that’s the first time a team has missed on picked a thrower in the first round.Of course the latest news coming from multiple sources is that John Elway is not interested in any QB in the first round and that rumor has it that the Redskins are “in love” with Dwayne Haskins. In our podcast we (Kevin and the Skipper Dude) discuss who we think will be available at the number ten spot in this year’s draft and we both agree that the most likely scenario is that the guys they love will be off the board and so they’ll trade back for more picks. The three guys that should be picked if there at ten would be (in Kevin’s opinion): Devin White, Ed Oliver and Dwayne Haskins (though again, according to the latest rumors, probably not Haskins.)If those three players aren’t there, which is very possible, then they trade back to the mid-teens and hope to pick up someone like T.J Hockenson or or Devin Bush. Though most people seem very okay with drafting an ILB or DT, the idea that Fangio will undoubtedly stackup on defense may be a misconception. Defensive coaches often stock up on offensive talent because they believe that they can coach up lesser talent on D. If Fangio has any say in this draft - which no doubt he will - then it would not be shocking if he picks someone like Hockenson. We will see.Is it Thursday yet? There are an exciting few days remaining in which we can read another 100 mocks and 60 of them will say (incorrectly) that Drew Lock is the guy. As I (Kevin) say in the podcast; if the Broncos select Drew Lock at ten I will sit in a freezing cold river for three minutes and eat crow and gladly post the video to Twitter @Kevvygillikin.Let’s go!IEWT! Denver Broncos NewsAn exciting camp battle will be shaping up at tight endNew,74commentsFinally this position could be interesting in the Broncos’ offense.MDTGood morning, Broncos Country!Hopefully your Fourth of July celebrations were fun and safe, and now you’re ready to talk some ... Tour de France? (just kidding, though many of you know I’m a huge fan of that event). How about U.S. women’s soccer because they are ROCKING it!?! Nah, let’s talk football. The doldrums of the offseason will be coming to a close soon (yay!) so it’s time to look toward some of the position battles shaping up that will be interesting to watch - as Tim, Jess and I did on our “Something Something Broncos” podcast this week (where, I also sang a little “Old Town Road” for ya - for which you’re welcome):While many of the position battles will be players fighting for the third or fourth (or fifth) spot on the 53-man roster - or possibly aiming for the practice squad - the position that boasts the Broncos first-round draft pick will mean a battle for the top spot.- giving him a 93 in jumping, 91 in acceleration Womens Dre'Mont Jones Jersey
, 89 in speed. Not that we care what a video game thinks, of course.Jeff HeuermanHeading into camp, previous starter Jeff Heuerman will likely be the penciled-in starter just because of experience, but once Fant gets up to speed on the offense and playing against NFL defenses, I don’t see any reason why he doesn’t overtake that No. 1 spot.Although Heuerman finally started showing last season why he was drafted, having to exit the field early every season due to injury has not helped him. The Broncos re-signed him earlier this spring, primarily as insurance and a hope that this will be the season he stays healthy enough to have a more lasting impact.Heuerman was having his best statistical season last year before getting injured, logging 31 catches, 281 yards, and two touchdowns. His breakout game in 2018 came against the Texans, where he caught 10 of 11 targets and nabbed a touchdown. Jake ButtComing off a third ACL injury, Jake Butt just needs to prove he can stay on the field long enough to get some stats. He made his NFL debut last season, starting the first three games and catching eight of his 13 targets for 85 yards. But another ACL injury during practice took him out for the year once again, and now he’s planning to return by training camp.If he can prove to the be talented tight end he was projected to be - and can stay healthy - he could easily compete for that second spot.Troy FumagaliTight ends in Denver have spent more time in training room than on the field as the third returning tight end and a 2018 draft pick Troy Fumagalli will be fighting for another chance to show why he was drafted.Fumagalli gained about 10 pounds of muscle while working back to full strength last season, and he believes this will help him this season.“I think I really needed this time. I think it was a blessing for me, looking back on it,” Fumagalli said in January. “I’m just fortunate that Elway and everybody else gave me the chance to grow and learn this year, and I’ll be ready to go next year.” Camp battleThis position is the one I’m most excited to watch, not just because it has our first-round draft pick but also because it has been such a bust of a position for the Broncos for years. Owen Daniels gave the team a lift for one year - and it was a good year given that he was a big part of the playoff run for the SB 50 win - but the position needs consistency, and with the Rich Scangarello offense, it’s also going to need players with some toughness. The most likely depth chart order will be Heuerman, Fant, Butt to start the season since Heuerman is the veteran, but if Fant gets up to NFL speed quickly, I bet he’s the top of the depth chart within the first few games.
