Good cholesterol is also known as the high-density lipoproteins or HDL. This type of cholesterol is produced naturally by the body and is also contained in many of the common foods that we eat. However, these same foods also contain bad cholesterol, or the low-density lipoproteins (LDL). When a person's LDL count rises, these bad cholesterol will build up in the bloodstream and block the natural flow of blood to the different parts of the body. This increases the risk for heart attack and other serious heart problems. What's even more dangerous is that cholesterol cannot be dissolved. On the contrary, it can travel fast to the entire circulatory system and eventually harden the arteries.
